Sin City has a really great look. Most of it is shot in black and white but there are bright splashes of color thrown in for effect. Sometimes it doesn’t look black and white but the colors are all so muted that the only color seems to come from actors faces. Everything has a very paper and ink look to it with dramatic black shadows and bright white contrast.
Sin City is ultra violent, but the stylishness of everything helps keep everything from being too realistic and gory. Some of the things that happen to people are absolutely terrible, but in the world they live nothing seems to hurt all that much. It especially seems impossible to actually kill anyone—bullets, falls from absurdly high places, being dragged by a car on asphalt, and all the other myriad things that happen only inflict minor nonfatal wounds. This is entirely believable because the world the movie paints is complete and consistent. The end result is that it somehow manages its gruesome violence without being too... well, gruesome.
I think this is one of the better movies I’ve seen all year. It was so different from anything else that it definitely begs to be seen. Go. Now.
